Showdown: IP PBX vs. Hosted PBX

In one corner we have the IP PBX. The IP PBX is an installable piece of equipment on the business premise. The system has to be installed and wired so that the phones all wire back to the IP PBX in the central phone system area. The IP PBX has Voice Over IP (VoIP) features allowing a business to deploy IP phones to branch offices and home offices. The IP PBX also does voicemail to email integration which allows people to get voicemails anywhere! The IP PBX system requires an upfront purchase starting in the thousands. The IP PBX can be managed across the internet; however, should anything happen internally to the "box" then phone system will be down and a systems engineer will have to come out and repair the box on a service call. The IP PBX does not provide a business with any kind of local, long-distance, or international calling service. The IP PBX is only equipment and must be hooked up to some sort of business line service to achieve local, long-distance, and telephone numbers. In other words, you purchase the IP PBX system, then you go on to pay monthly for your telephone numbers, local, and long distance.

In the other corner we have hosted PBX phone systems. Hosted PBX systems are not installed at the business location. Instead user-friendly VoIP phone handsets are shipped to the business location. These VoIP phones simply need to be plugged in, and once they turn on they automatically work as your office extension. This means phones can be seamlessly moved around offices, branch offices, and anywhere that has an internet connection. Since the brains of Hosted PBX systems are not at the business location, there is nothing on site to ever break. 100% of service is conducted live via the internet with never a service call needed. The hosted PBX system also gives your office telephone numbers, local, and long-distance service. In most cases the local and long-distance is inexpensive and saves the company a great deal of money. Thus, the hosted PBX phone system completely takes over as an all-in-one voice solution with one bill.
